Start with the whole stay
Set one accommodation ceiling for your whole party and all nights. Keep the currency consistent when comparing quotes. If the merchant presents a different currency, record the conversion assumption separately and check your payment provider’s terms rather than treating an estimate as the amount you will pay.
Write down the unknowns
List any taxes, breakfast, towels, baggage storage or deposits shown in the booking terms. Mark each as included, extra, refundable or unconfirmed. Do not turn an unmentioned service into an included one. A deposit and a nonrefundable charge also belong in different parts of your worksheet.
Buy facilities you will use
Before valuing a kitchen, check that guest cooking is allowed and what access is actually described. Before valuing breakfast, decide whether it fits your departure time and eating preferences. We would not pay extra for an amenity solely because it appears on a long facilities list.
If you expect to work, sleep early or eat in, put that requirement beside the room cost. Ask the operator about the specific facility that makes your plan possible. Avoid assuming that a lounge is a workspace or that a bar provides guest cooking.
Budget for the journey you choose
Include a transport allowance based on your own intended trips and the current official ticket rules. Compare the complete arrival journey rather than selecting accommodation from a station name alone. Keep a separate contingency for a changed arrival or a missed connection; this guide does not forecast fares or journey times.
Keep one dated decision sheet
Save the final booking conditions with the date, room name, occupancy and cancellation deadline. Treat an old comparison as a planning note until you check it again. We publish no universal cheapest hostel claim because a useful choice depends on your dates, requirements and current merchant terms.
Your stay budget
Fill in these amounts from the offers you are considering for the same dates and party.
- Whole-party accommodation total for all nights.
- Mandatory charges shown separately by the merchant.
- Optional food, linen, storage or other services you intend to buy.
- Refundable deposit or payment hold, recorded separately from the cost.
- Planned local transport based on current official information.
- A contingency that you decide for changes to your own plans.
Check the final amount and cancellation terms immediately before payment. If you are comparing a room with individual beds, use the private room or dorm worksheet. For a more specific shortlist, read where to stay and then open the relevant property guide.
Before building a grocery-based food budget, compare guest food facilities. A microwave, a full kitchen and permission to bring outside food should be checked separately.
