The Marais: Paris history and architecture
Start at Place des Vosges, continue through the Hôtel de Sully stop on rue Saint-Antoine, then head toward Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis. The square’s arcades and the Sully garden give the walk two different architectural settings. Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine is a convenient optional pause.
Carnavalet at 23 rue Madame de Sévigné is the main indoor choice for Paris history. Permanent collections are free without booking; normal hours are Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:15. Visit the museum before the outdoor walk when time is short. Large luggage is not accepted.
Montmartre: the hill and the artists
Begin below the hill at Marché Saint-Pierre and Halle Saint-Pierre. Continue to Square Louise Michel, then take the funicular or climb toward Sacré-Cœur. After the church and terrace, Place du Tertre has artists working around the square.
Choose Musée de Montmartre for the district’s art history and Renoir gardens, or Dalí Paris for works by Salvador Dalí. The vineyard-side streets and a descent toward Abbesses can finish the outing. Sacré-Cœur’s dome requires 280 narrow steps with no lift; it is separate from the free basilica visit.
After a flight or train
Place des Vosges and the short walk toward Saint-Paul work without a museum reservation. If you are tired or still waiting for room access, keep this shorter version and eat near the hostel. A full Montmartre visit is better left for another day when you want to spend time on the hill.
